Agricultural soils and microplastics: Are biosolids the problem?

نویسندگان

چکیده

Biosolids are the solid by-product of wastewater treatment system. They regularly applied to agricultural land in UK fertilize and increase crop yields, but they have been shown contain high concentrations microplastics. Here we sampled a selection soils Southeast England which had received or never biosolid treatment. Sites were on two occasions summer winter. Microplastic (MP) numbers both treated fields (874 MP/kg) untreated (664 wide variety polymers found across sites. However, there was lack significant difference between soils. This suggests influence other microplastic sources e.g. plastic general littering, external conditions farm management rainfall. higher suggesting that erosion, runoff, wind transport may be removing microplastics from these systems. The dynamic nature result them becoming vector for into wider environment. variability results seen here highlights complexity heterogeneous study biosolids, whilst likely contributor, not sole source Further research is required determine sink dynamics Understanding contamination imperative future mitigation strategies effective.

Detection of the antimicrobials triclocarban and triclosan in agricultural soils following land application of municipal biosolids.

The occurrence of the antimicrobials triclocarban (TCC) and triclosan (TCS) was investigated in agricultural soils following land application of biosolids using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) with negative ion multimode ionization. The method detection limits were 0.58 ng TCC/g soil, 3.08 ng TCC/g biosolids, 0.05 ng TCS/g soil and 0.11 ng TCS/g biosolids and the avera...

Phosphorus runoff from waste water treatment biosolids and poultry litter applied to agricultural soils.

Differences in the properties of organic phosphorus (P) sources, particularly those that undergo treatment to reduce soluble P, can affect soil P solubility and P transport in surface runoff. This 2-yr field study investigated soil P solubility and runoff P losses from two agricultural soils in the Mid-Atlantic region after land application of biosolids derived from different waste water treatm...

Persistence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in agricultural soils after biosolids applications.

This study examines polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) levels, trends in biosolids from a wastewater treatment plant, and evaluates potential factors governing PBDE concentrations and the fate in agricultural soils fertilized by biosolids. The mean concentration of the most abundant PBDE congeners in biosolids ( summation operatorBDE-47, BDE-99, and BDE-209) generated by one wastewater treat...

Phytoavailability of cadmium in long-term biosolids-amended soils.

Agronomic use of biosolids has raised concern that plant availability of biosolids-Cd will increase with time after cessation of biosolids application. It has been demonstrated that chemical extractability of Cd is persistently decreased in biosolids-amended soils. This study was conducted to determine if Cd phytoavailability in long-term biosolids-amended soils was also persistently decreased....
